The massacre of intellectuals by the Pakistan army in 1971 meant that East Pakistan was a dangerous place for Syed Haq to inhabit during the Liberation War of Bangladesh.  He arranged passage to London where he took up a post with the BBC World Service.  It was during this time that he announced the independence declaration of Bangladesh live on World Service, the footage of which is available on this website and maintained by the BBC archives.

Following the emergence of Bangladesh, Syed Haq would continue to live in London until 1979, when he returned permanently to Dhaka.
