Syed Shamsul Haq was born on 27th December 1935 in Kurigram, a province that lies today in the North-West corner of Bangladesh close to the Indian border. His father, Dr Syed Siddique Hussain was a homeopathic physician originally from Sirajgonj, a district further to the South. Dr Hussain went to Kolkata (then Calcutta) to finish his studies and pursue a career in homepathic medicine. However, he was unhappy with his work in the big city and longed to provide care to the poor and needy.
By chance, a position arose in Bhogdanga, close to Kurigram in the household of Zaminder Kazi Imdadul Haque which suited Dr Hussain’s needs perfectly. Over time, he settled there with his remaining brothers, the story of which is documented in a number of Syed Haq’s biographies.
Syed Shamsul Haq was the oldest of eight children and a solitary child from birth.
